Giants' DeVito has classy response to being benched

Tommy DeVito’s brief run of celebrity as New York Giants starting quarterback is over, at least for now, but he is handling it quite well.

The Giants announced Wednesday that DeVito would be benched in favor of Tyrod Taylor for Week 17. DeVito admitted that he was disappointed and surprised by the decision, but he offered an impressively even-keeled response.

“Yeah, continue to be a good teammate. Obviously, it’s a coaches’ decision. I have, obviously, no say in that,” DeVito said, via Jordan Ranaan of ESPN. “But I’m going to continue to be a good teammate, go out and compete. That’s it.

“The same thing I’ve said since the beginning: Stay even-keel through it all. Never too high or too low because like I said, when you’re up, everybody loves you. When you’re down, everybody hates you. So, for me, stay even though it all.”

Credit to DeVito for maturely handling the situation. He had not necessarily played poorly or made glaring mistakes with the Giants, but Taylor simply moved the ball better in the second half of Monday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

DeVito’s time as starter may be over for now, but he made a very big impression during his seven weeks atop the depth chart.
